The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The PhD is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.
The PhD programme at the Faculty of Business and Accountancy has undergone stringent peer evaluation and built upon several years of experience in producing quality doctorates in business and accounting. It takes cognizance of emerging needs of educators and researchers in the 21st century. One of the strengths of the programme is the requirement to undertake core courses which strengthen the foundation for all doctoral students to enhance their research journey.
PhD students will carry out focused research in their area of specialisation, which is of immediate relevance to local interest. Additionally, they will be attentive to the challenges faced in the international arena through the media, seminars, conferences and keynote addresses.
Applicants for the PhD programme at the University of Malaya must satisfy the following requirements:
- A master’s degree by way of research; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA of not less than 3.7; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA not less than 3.0; or
- A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between 2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99, and one (1) of the following criteria:
- relevant work experience;
- publication in the relevant field;
- applicant is a scholarship holder;
- applicant is a University of Malaya graduate.
- Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of not less than 3.7 may be admitted to the PhD Programme. These candidates are required to defend their candidature in a research progress seminar to be held on a date two (2) semesters from the initial registration date; failing which the candidature may be converted to the relevant Master’s degree.
English Language Requirement for Non-Malaysian
TOEFL – score 550; or
IELTS (Academic) – band 6.00; or
Pass English Language course offered by University of Malaya (UMCCed) ; or
Who possesses a degree or degrees from a university or an institution of higher education where the medium of instruction is in English language.
Graduates with PhD degree may pursue their career in academic line in institutions or to become a researcher in any research institute.
